Breakout Session #1

Come participate in a discussion about changes in interface technology and the opportunities and challenges of designing for Microsoft Surface. Learn about design principles, patterns, and approaches for creating memorable Natural User Interfaces (NUI) from a practitioner's point of view.

Neil Bunn (IBM) will face off with Tim Smith (Gridcentric) as they debate about one of the top technology trends for 2010 - Cloud Computing. With perspectives from a multi-national enterprise and a tiny start-up, delegates will learn what drives the Cloud Computing hype as they discuss how this emerging concept is being used in the real world - and why its uses are growing.

Nanotechnology has tremendous opportunities in biology and there are already examples of nanotechnology being used to advance medical treatment. Unlike the nanobots in movies like GI Joe where nanobots are used to control human behaviour and destroy physical structures, nanotechnology is being used in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In this seminar Dr. Shoichet will highlight some of the advances that her team are making in nanotechnology in medicine.

Breakout Sessions #2

The Future of Gaming panel will have a discussion for about 40 minutes followed by a Q&A session. Panelists include Julian Spillane (CEO of Canadian Gaming Start-up Frozen North), Rob Balahura (Director of Electronic Arts Social Platforms), and Vikas Gupta (President and CEO of Transgaming Technologies).

The focus of the panel will be 'Future of Gaming' and will span across Social Media Gaming, Virtual Goods, Analytics, 3D Immersion and Computing/Console Technology. Questions will be driven by the latest news and industry trends, as well as, where is the future of gaming located?

Although there is currently much focus on the Electronic Health Record (EHR), technology can transform health care in many more ways. To achieve high-quality health care, interactions among people, information, equipment and resources should be maximized. These connections can be facilitated and enhanced by technology. Brantz Myers will discuss the link between intelligent hospitals and how they can dynamically help the people who use the facilities: healthcare providers, clinicians, patients, visitors and others. By simplifying the connections from any person, any place, through any device to any resource, real value can be delivered to the end-points the people. He will talk about what has been learned from past attempts and what is now possible. Finally, he will discuss why executive strategic attention must consider this role of technology, although it can be complex, have challenges and sources of resistance. He will illustrate how the increasing technology investment in today’s hospitals can be leveraged to create a more sustainable environment and have a direct impact on health care.

Due to the vast amount of news-worthy data available from both traditional and social media sources, and the speed at which these are propagated through different channels, proper filtering and search of media has never been so critical.

Thoora is a next-generation real-time news aggregation system that clusters and ranks data from traditional media, the blogosphere and twitter using various sophisticated technologies. In this seminar, Thoora will provide an overview on (1) why an algorithmic approach is the future of aggregation and (2) different real technical challenges that Thoora has been facing while building their system.

Breakout Sessions #3

A discussion revolving around the field of nanotechnology and advanced materials in general, including Vive Nano’s interests in improved crop protection, catalytic, and water treatment products. The genesis of Vive Nano will also be discuessed, from a concept in a University laboratory to a company that currently has 15 employees and is expanding rapidly. In particular, advice for prospective scientific or engineering entrepreneurs will be discussed, including potential pitfalls and issues common in early-stage start-ups.

Today’s Internet is way too much work. We all spend enormous amounts of time and money caught in the Web: searching for information, creating content, building social networks, shopping for products, and on and on. In five years, it will seem incredible that we have to work so hard just to get stuff done.

Tomorrow’s Internet will look very different. New technologies have emerged that are drastically simplifying things. Entirely new modes of consumer interactions and new mass market networks are taking hold. If you are exploring possibilities for The Next Big Thing, this discussion is for you.

In this session, Peter will examine: A framework for understanding how new digital activities and mass market networks emerge; Breakthrough technologies that allow us to imagine better ways to use the Internet; Demos of thought networking, a new way to use the Internet that leverages computers as personal assistants.

Jigsee enables the delivery and discovery of video and other forms of rich content via mobile devices in developing countries. Its proprietary adaptive streaming technology is the first to deliver long form video content reliably over low bandwidth, congested networks, as exist in hyper-growth markets such as India.

In this talk, Ray will discuss issues such as:

  • breaking into a foreign market when you have not a single contact, nor do you speak the language

  • the need for thorough market research and the difference that made once we established contact

  • the need to experience the market first hand. Theory and report analysis will only get you so far.

  • breaking down the opportunity for investors at home who lack the international context
